Excerpt:

I began to lose pieces of myself over the winter break.

I had returned home from college to spend time with my mother and younger sister until the spring semester began in January. Christmas was a trying affair; only the second one our family had endured since my father died a year and a half earlier. His stocking still hung from the mantle, his armchair left empty while we opened gifts—and his ghost ever present.

My father’s death left my mother with a permanent scowl etched into her flawless features. My mother was beautiful in a way that made strangers assume she was a famous actress or a world-class model. Her hair was naturally dark with auburn highlights, and her eyes were the color of emeralds. Jaws dropped when it was revealed she was a housewife. Pitiful expressions betrayed their thoughts: what a waste of beauty.

My younger sister, Lila, and I were a disappointment to my mother because of our ordinariness. We both had straight brown hair and the same murky brown eyes as our father. No one stopped to compliment us on our stunning looks. Since middle school, boys would ask to come over to our house to glimpse my mother sunning in the backyard, clad in a skimpy bikini and rolled onto her back with the strings left untied. The boys’ eyes would volley between my mother, Lila, and me, their thoughts leaking into their expressions: a beautiful mother didn’t always guarantee a beautiful daughter.

Dad had always been our biggest advocate, shushing my mother’s criticisms and making outrageous claims about how Lila and I were the greatest beauties that ever graced the planet. I never realized how much of a buffer he was until he was gone.

I had my own personal countdown for when I’d be able to return to my college campus, because each day brought a new barrage of insults from my mom. I tried to sympathize; she was drowning in her own misery, but all I craved was an escape. My father was the one great love of her life and his death undermined her chance of ever being happy again. Although she ate up the attention other men gave her, my father was the only man that could melt her iciness. My father would tell us about how all the boys in their small hometown were too intimidated to ask my mom out on a date—the walls around her seemingly impenetrable. My dad may not have been the handsomest man to ever ask her out, but he was the most devoted and kind.

Review: Going Under by S. Walden

Goodreads Summary:

Brooke Wright has only two goals her senior year at Charity Run High School: stay out of trouble and learn to forgive herself for the past. Forgiveness proves elusive, and trouble finds her anyway when she discovers a secret club at school connected to the death of her best friend. She learns that swim team members participate in a “Fantasy Slut League,” scoring points for their sexual acts with unsuspecting girls.

Brooke, wracked with guilt over her friend’s death, decides to infiltrate the league by becoming one of the “unsuspecting girls,” and exact revenge on the boys who stole away her best friend. An unexpected romance complicates her plans, and her dogged pursuit of justice turns her reckless as she underestimates just how far the boys will go to keep their sex club a secret.

(This is a New Adult fiction book with mature themes. It contains graphic sex and language and a description of sexual violence.)

Publication Date: March 14, 2013

This is a rare instance where I consider a book to be one of the best I ever read, but I will never read it again. Going Under was too intense and heartbreaking for me to ever consider wanting to revisit the plot and characters. Days later, I still have a book hangover from all of the strong emotions the novel stirred inside of me.

I was a little leery at the start. Brooke was really unlikable to me; she had done things to her friend, despicable acts, that I found hard to understand. Her friend commits suicide and because Brooke is wracked with guilt, she decides to avenge her friend in the most ill-advised way, by infiltrating a club where the guys keep score of how many sexual acts they commit with girls.

What I found amazing was that the author was able to actually have me feel empathic for such a selfish and reckless girl, because you can’t read this story and feel nothing over the things that happen to Brooke.

Characterizations were done amazing well, especially with the awful boys from the swim team. There’s Parker, who is downright evil, and isn’t afraid to show it. But I found Cal, especially chilling. He’s the charming manipulator, hiding his true character behind his golden boy exterior. I have mixed feelings about Ryan and I think a lot of those feelings come from the mystery that unravels about his past. I did love the romance between him and Brooke though. The video game scene was the hottest thing I’ve read in a long time.

SPOILERS
The author is a risk-taker and I’m impressed with her ability to touch on subjects that most writers wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole and pull it off so well. Brooke’s rape was one of the most disgusting acts of sexual violence I ever read in a novel. I was crying, ugly crying, and I still feel choked up as I replay the scene in my head. I could see the author getting slack for Brooke having an orgasm during rape, and to be honest I never even thought about that occurring and was glad the author not only brought it to my attention, but wrote a very thoughtful note at the end discussing the subject.
The book could’ve ended with Brooke broken and I was glad how the author decided to end the novel. A rape victim can still have a healthy sex life and a happily every after and I was glad Brooke got to have that.
END OF SPOILERS

I recommend this to all women over the age of eighteen. The language and sex is graphic, so definitely don’t take that warning lightly. If you don’t know who S. Walden is yet, I promise that you will soon!

Review: Requiem (Delirium #3) by Lauren Oliver

Goodreads Summary:

They have tried to squeeze us out, to stamp us into the past.

But we are still here.

And there are more of us every day.

Now an active member of the resistance, Lena has been transformed. The nascent rebellion that was under way in Pandemonium has ignited into an all-out revolution in Requiem, and Lena is at the center of the fight.

After rescuing Julian from a death sentence, Lena and her friends fled to the Wilds. But the Wilds are no longer a safe haven—pockets of rebellion have opened throughout the country, and the government cannot deny the existence of Invalids. Regulators now infiltrate the borderlands to stamp out the rebels, and as Lena navigates the increasingly dangerous terrain, her best friend, Hana, lives a safe, loveless life in Portland as the fiancée of the young mayor.

Maybe we are driven crazy by our feelings.

Maybe love is a disease, and we would be better off without it.

But we have chosen a different road.

And in the end, that is the point of escaping the cure: We are free to choose.

We are even free to choose the wrong thing.

Requiem is told from both Lena’s and Hana’s points of view. The two girls live side by side in a world that divides them until, at last, their stories converge.

Publication Date: March 5, 2013

Although I saw many of the reviews complaining about the ending of Requiem, I was still hoping I’d end up loving the final book in one of my favorite YA trilogies. Unfortunately I was disappointed along with many other readers and this book certainly left me leery over reading any future series by Oliver.

What I Liked: I love Oliver’s writing style—girl knows her way around a metaphor. Like the previous books, I felt completely transported to this dystopian society. There was a lot of action in the final book and the suspense was phenomenal. I had no idea what was going to happen and whether or not the Resistance would be able to defeat the society.

The dual POV was also enjoyable. I liked seeing things from Hana’s POV and being able to get a glimpse inside the head of a “cured.” Since I never read any of the novellas, I had missed Hana’s character since she was last seen in Delirium.

There were a few heartbreaking twists and the appearance of a few surprise characters I was happy to see pop up.

What I Didn’t Like: The characters became very unlikable in the final book. Alex was a jerk to Lena and Lena was a jerk to Julian and Julian was just kind of there. I sympathized with all that they had been through, but their selfishness made me less invested in what happened to them.

SPOILERS
The romance was my least favorite part of the book, I disliked it almost as much as the open-ended conclusion. I liked Alex and Lena in the first book and Lena and Julian in the second book, but there was no chemistry between any of them in this book. I didn’t feel the fight for love message that I assumed was the point of these books.

After three books, readers are left not knowing how the romance turns out or if the Resistance wins. Several other character’s fates are left hanging too (Tack? sob). On Oliver’s blog, she says that she wrote the ending because she wanted readers to be able to continue imagining what happened next for the characters. Really? I have my own characters in my head, I don’t want to do any work to figure out what happens to fictional characters, especially in the final book of a series.
END OF SPOILERS

This is my least favorite book in the trilogy and I had a hard time figuring out a fair rating. I’m going to go with three stars because the book isn’t terribly written and it’s still an interesting story.

Rating: 3/5 Stars

I received a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

All My Life by Rucy Ban Cover Reveal and Giveaway

Summary:

Seventeen-year-old Kari meets Neil Mars. “Neil as in Armstrong and Mars…as in Bruno.” A boy who beats every vampire, werewolf, highlander fantasy Kari has ever had. But she knows can’t get close to him. Not ever. Because that would mean telling him everything. Coming clean. And Kari can’t bear the idea of changing the way Neil looks at her. Like she’s the only girl in the world. His reverence is something too precious to lose. Perhaps even at the cost of losing him.
But Kari doesn't know why Neil calls her his ‘Angel’ and when she finds out, she realizes what love is all about. Boundless joy, unending longing and a fuckload of heartache.

EXCERPTS from All My Life:

“I can take care of myself,” I tell him.
His lips twitch in response. “Oh, I’m sure you can, little shrub.”
“You are warned!” I take my voice down a notch and point my ring at him, “I’ll tunnel your leathery knighthood right out of this galaxy!”
Neil suddenly halts in his tracks and pins me down with eyes. “Batman vs. Green Lantern? Batman wins. Every. Single. Time.”
“Ohmygod! So not true. In the…”
He cuts me. “One word…yellow.” I stare at him with my mouth half-open.
“‘Nuff said,” he says smugly and then tugs on my hand.

******
Maybe I’ll forget this feeling someday. Maybe it’ll just be reduced to a memory made up of a flickering gas heater, the salty dew of his skin and the love in his dark, inky eyes. This feeling of pure unadulterated joy. Of reaching a high so potent that your spirit feels like it’s soaring across the universe…and falling from that glorious peak only to find yourself enveloped in someone’s warm caring hands. When you feel like you’ve just died or been born, right at the same time.
It could be that I’ll forget this feeling someday. But I’m sure it won’t be anytime soon. Maybe when I’m a hundred and looking forward to my lunch of mashed bread. Not one single day before.

Excerpt:

Four of the bats landed before me and hobbled closer. Their talons scratched against the concrete surface of the sidewalk, making a dreadful screeching sound. Their fetid stench, of slobber and decay and rotting flesh, reached me and I fought the urge to puke.
I crawled a few feet away and watched in horror as three other bats landed behind me, blocking my only escape route. I was surrounded.
I recalled my pepper spray inside my purse. I had it for muggers and robbers, but my weapon had saved me from these creatures before. Of course, pepper spray hadn’t hurt the bats, just bought me some distraction so I could run away, and I had never been attacked by more than two bats at once, but it was worth a try.
With trembling hands, I reached inside my purse. But, as my fingers stroked the can, a bat lunged at me. Yelling, I covered my head with my arms. The animal clawed, tearing into my body.
I tried to roll over and crawl somewhere, anywhere, but was pushed down by a potent blow. I hit the concrete, hard, and gasped as the air flew out of me.
Tears brimmed in my eyes. I struggled to hash out a new plan. Nothing. My mind was blank.
I raised my head and looked over. Two more bats glided up to me. I could see in their crimson eyes they were done playing. This time, they would strike for real. There was nothing I could do. I held my breath and braced myself, feeling a slow tear trickle down my face.
Their talons scratched my already torn jacket. I waited, wondering if I’d die or be injured for life.
Then … Nothing.
My eyes shot open. Was I having one of my hallucinations? Were the bats really retreating? I sat up and rubbed my eyes. The bats withdrew, their wings folded behind them, but they seemed to be recoiling from something—or someone. I turned around and saw the back of a tall man. He stood about ten feet from me, his head held high as if a defiant attitude would send the bats away. The odd part was—it did. The bats avoided looking at him as they slowly retreated. Seconds later, the creatures unfurled their gargantuan wings and flew away.
I gaped at the back of the mysterious man.

Book Trailer

Author Melanie Schulz

I live in Upstate New York with my husband and three children, where I’ve pretty much been planted my entire life. Which is fine, because it’s beautiful here. My only complaint is that most people assume that New York means NYC, which it doesn’t. There. I’ve done my part in exposing the truth.
Truth. The truth is I’m not a writer; storyteller maybe, but not a writer. It wasn’t something I spent years dreaming of, or even what I went to school for. I’m a nurse. I love being a nurse. So why write? I don’t know. I do know when it started, though. September 3, 2010. I know this because I nature journal, and on that day Joel made it into my notes. I guess that’s fitting. Someone like him needed to be birthed out in the woods.
If you were to meet me, and I hope someday you do, you would not connect me with this story. I’m a wife, a mother, a nurse. The person who wrote this should’ve been a guy, first off, secondly he should be some militaristic strategist; that’s who you’d expect to see if you were to come to a book signing, not me. But I’m there, in every line. So if I don’t have the good fortune to meet you in person, I hope to see you in THE NEWSTEAD PROJECT.
