“I’m sorry,” I managed. “I know you probably don’t believe me, but I am so sorry that things turned out the way they did—”

He nodded although his tone remained dry and unfriendly. “You should have fun on the vacation. And if you want to hook up with someone, don’t feel awkward about it… I’m not planning to be a saint on the trip either.”

I could see the knife he had just used to cut out my heart—the serrated edges dripping with fresh blood. Hope had damned me to my own personal hell. Because as tough as I had played it for my friends’ benefits, the god’s honest truth was I had wished for him to see me and feel something again. Like he would look into my eyes and see directly into my heart.

His dangling of our renewed friendship was only a ruse. This was his true purpose. He wanted me to know I’d have to bear witness to him fucking whomever he wanted on vacation. I patted his shoulder heartily. “Thanks for being so grown up about it, Cole. I didn’t know you had it in you.”

He folded his arms across his chest and looked me up and down. I didn’t like the smug look on his face as he caught my eye. His face and posture reminded me of the arrogance that had withered away once we became serious about one another. “Okay, Casey. Game on.”

“What?”

His eyes were unreadable. “I figured if we were friends, we could show each other some respect. Not rub any hookups in the other person’s face. But since you so rudely swatted away my outreached hand—”

I rolled my eyes. “Were you this annoying when we dated? Because I’m surprised we lasted as long as we did.”

He leaned down and whispered in a low rumble, “You still want me. I know you. I know you. I remember how you get defensive when you want to hide what you’re feeling. I get that your pride will keep you from telling me the truth about what really happened between us. And I know that by the time this boat docks back in port, you’ll be in my bed, asking for a another chance.”

I flushed and said in an affronted voice, “In your dreams, creep.”

“Like I said, Casey, game on.” He planted a quick, affectionless peck on the side of my head before sidestepping around me. He walked away confidently back toward our group. Review: Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray

I read A Thousand Pieces of You last year and loved it. LOVED IT. I was so happy to revisit the world Gray created and reconnect with my favorite characters from the first book. Although I’m not sure I loved this book as hard, I still found myself hooked from the very first page.

I would recommend a quick reread of the first book before beginning Ten Thousand Skies Above You. I found it much easier to get invested in what was happening in all of the parallel universes that Marquerite visited. In the first book, Marguerite only visits a couple of worlds while she hops around much more in this book.

The world building was much stronger in this book. We learned more about the villain Conley’s plans as well as how many differences could be found in the parallel universes. It was interesting to read about how some worlds were practically in the dark ages while others were technologically advanced.

I liked Marguerite in this book again, but she can be a little judgey. I felt like she was pretty harsh to both Theo and Paul at times, especially in regards to making them feel responsible for acts committed by their parallel selves. I was a huge Paul fan from the first book, and I hold onto my crush steadfastly, so I wasn’t thrilled with the love triangle aspect. But I was happy that Marguerite seemed to grow throughout the book and realize her mistakes.

The ending was crazy!!! I was bowled over and I am so excited to read the next book. I wish it was coming out tomorrow. Fans of YA time-traveling romances will adore this series.

I liked Shy Kinda Love. I was looking for a good New Adult romance to get swept away with and this book satisfied my reading appetites. The middle was a little slow for me, but the book definitely ends with a bang.

Although I read the story before of the broken girl with the ugly past, Shy’s story really touched me. I think the author did a good job of making me feel connected to Shy and everything she has gone through. I never felt annoyed by Shy or her choices, she really gave the book it’s “heart.”

Kade was charming and I liked he wasn’t the typical reformed bad boy love interest. Their relationship is every endearing and sweet. Although this book is New Adult, there’s not a lot of sexy time in it. But the innocent romance worked well for the characters.

The beginning and end of the book was the strongest. The first chapter pulls the reader into the story while the last chapter ties everything up nicely. Definitely a good read for fans of college-age romances.

I always enjoy a New Adult romance by Abbi Glines and Bad for You was no exception. The plot was pretty formulaic: bad boy rocker finds love with innocent virgin. I was able to guess a lot of the plot before it happened, but I still find myself swept away in Krit and Blythe’s romance.

Krit was a good male lead although he made a lot of questionable choices, especially regarding women. But that is to be expected since Blythe is the only girl who makes him believe in true love. Blythe is shy and awkward, but Krit finds her intriguing. They begin as friends before realizing they feel something much more. I liked Blythe for the most part, but she was a little too weak at times. Like I wanted to yell at her to stop apologizing for the most ridiculous things.

The sex scenes were spectacular. Abbi Glines is a master at writing a good love scene. I really felt the emotional and physical connection between Krit and Blythe. It was also fun to see Krit help Blythe discover her own sexuality.

The pacing was good, so I flew through the book. There was a good amount of drama, although some of the subplots were a little annoying. But I really loved the conclusion, I liked that both Krit and Blythe found a way to be happy. Bad for You is a solid entry in the Sea Breeze series and can be read as a standalone.

Review: Asking for It by Kate Harding

I read this book as research for one of my own upcoming novels. I was looking into how to define “rape culture” and how society treats victims of sexual assault. Although the statistics and stories shared in the work are disheartening, I would say this book is a must read for every single woman.

What made me the sickest while reading was the many examples of victim blaming. The book really was eye opening in the many ways that rape victims are shamed. I remember reading a New York Time article a few years back that shared quotes from neighbors of an eleven year old who was gang raped. The neighbors talked about how the girl dressed older than her age and wore makeup and clothing more appropriate for women in their 20s. Asking for It shares more of these stories including one story of a defense attorney who compares a raped eleven year old to a spider and the perpetrator the fly.

The book covers a lot of topics and I think the author thoroughly examines many hot button issues of today such as revenge pornography, rape jokes and the high incidence of sexual assault on college campuses. The book is by no means an easy read, but definitely an important one.

Review: Bad Romeo by Leisa Rayven

Bad Romeo was a great New Adult book. I liked the time jumps between past and present. The writing was solid and I really found myself emotionally invested in Ethan and Cassie’s relationship.

Cassie is a very likable narrator and I really enjoyed that the story was told only from her point of view. It added to the mystery surrounding Ethan. The couple was so great together, it made me curious over what could have caused Ethan’s hot and cold attitude toward her.

I liked the setup of the novel too and how Cassie and Ethan are forced together again after years apart. The sexual tension between the two of them was explosive. I also adore love/hate relationships and they definitely enjoyed antagonizing each other, just as much as they liked hooking up.

The ending is a cliffhanger, but the next book is already out. I can’t wait to see how Cassie and Ethan’s tale ends.

Review: Delayed Penalty by Sophia Henry

I really, really liked the premise of Delayed Penalty and I thought the characters were fun. I also liked that the sole focus wasn’t on just the romance between Auden and Alek. The novel is also about Auden trying to find herself.

Auden and Alek were iffy for me at the start. Alek came off as a jerk and I just didn’t feel a connection to Auden. I think her character took some time to develop for me, but she did grow on me by the book’s end.

The pace was good and I liked that the author tried to show the real issues that could be involved with dating a pro hockey player. The time apart was helpful for Auden’s development, but I think it hurt the chemistry between the hero and heroine. They never really clicked for me as a couple.

Overall, I did like the book and I thoroughly enjoyed the ending. There is a happily ever after and I liked that the book can be read as a standalone. Fans of New Adult romances will likely enjoy Delayed Penalty.

Review: Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes

Last year’s You was a book that stayed with me for a long time. I remember reading it and not being able to get the character of Joe out of my head. Serial killer novels from the murderer’s point of view are usually sick and twisty, but Joe is scary because he’s just so gosh darn likable.

Joe is such a complicated character that I’m sure if he was a real, psychologists could develop textbooks based around him. He’s funny and insightful and has a way of convincingly rationalizing his murders. The tough thing about Joe is that I couldn’t decide if I wanted him to have a happy ending or get killed off in an atrocious manner.

The plot of Hidden Bodies didn’t charm me as much as the previous book. I liked the change of scenery, but I didn’t feel as invested in the relationship between Love and Joe as I had with him and Beck. Love almost felt like a caricature instead of a real person, especially when compared to the rich characterization of Joe.

The pace was good and the end was a nail-biter. There were a few twists I didn’t see coming and a few that I felt were a little too out there to believe. I thought the conclusion was well done and I’m curious if there will be a follow up or not. I love the author’s writing style, so I’m definitely reading everything she writes from here on out.

Review: Someone Out There by Catherine Hunt

Someone Out There was a good mystery/psychological thriller. It took me a bit to get into, but once I got to the meat of the story I was hooked. The tension is slow building, but I thought the climax was very exciting and I couldn’t guess what direction the story was going in.

I did like the main character Laura and I felt for her as all these terrible things start to happen. I felt for her as she tried to do the right thing by her clients and to protect them from horrible situations (i.e. domestic violence, loss of parental rights, etc.). The secondary characters were good too and I liked that the reader got more than just Laura’s point of view.

The twist wasn’t easy to spot and really brought the story together for me. There are several red herrings that the author uses to keep readers guessing. The ending was fairly good although I would have liked a bit more closure.

I would recommend Someone Out There to fans of adult suspense novels. I think the author did a terrific job on her debut novel and I look forward to future books.

Review: The Cost of All Things by Maggie Lehrman

The Cost of All Things has a very interesting idea at the center of the story: what would you be willing to give in order to make your wishes come true? The hekamist angle was original and the story felt fresh, especially since I don’t read a lot of books about magical realism.

I liked the main character Ari and I wish the story was told in only her point of view. The multiple POVs felt like overkill and I think after learning the fate of one of the characters, one of the POVs could be left out. Also, I thought the wishes would be more intriguing, but they seemed mostly superficial.

The setting was well done and the magical parts were probably my favorite sections. I thought the rules regarding how magic could be used and what to do if you wanted the spell reversed was thought provoking.

The ending was just okay for me and I did feel like the author rushed to conclude all of the characters’ storylines. The writing was good and I do look forward to see what else books she’ll release in the future.
