Review: Remember When by T. Torrest

Summary:

Years before Trip Wiley could be seen on movie screens all over the world, he could be seen sitting in the desk behind me in my high school English class.

This was back in 1990, and I cite the year only to avoid dumbfounding you when references to big hair or stretch pants are mentioned. Although, come to think of it, I am from New Jersey, which may serve as explanation enough. We were teenagers then, way back in a time before anyone could even dream he’d turn into the Hollywood commodity that he is today.

In case you live under a rock and don't know who Trip Wiley is, just know that these days, he’s the actor found at the top of every casting director’s wish list. He’s incredibly talented and insanely gorgeous, the combination of which has made him very rich, very famous and very desirable.

And not just to casting directors, either.

I can’t confirm any of the gossip from his early years out in Tinseltown, but based on what I knew of his life before he was famous, I can tell you that the idea of Girls-Throwing-Themselves-At-Trip is not a new concept.

I should know. I was one of them.

And my life hasn’t been the same since.

This book was such a cute, fun read! I loved the nineties references along with the author’s humor about New Jersey. I think the title is perfect since I felt like Layla as she remembered back to when she went to high school with Trip before he became a famous actor.

I loved the author’s writing style. She really captured Layla’s voice and I felt like the whole time Layla was telling her story about Trip to her best friend. The plot was pretty basic, but what made the story standout was how many laugh out loud funny parts there were in the story.

Layla and Trip were equally both great characters and I was swooning right alongside Layla with every little sweet thing Trip did. They had terrific chemistry and their relationship had just the perfect amount of angst.

The only thing I didn’t like was how or specifically when the book ended. I get that it’s a trilogy, but I expected a little bit of a glimpse of Trip in the future since the prologue tells the reader that he’s now a super famous movie star. Maybe it was a good call though since I am eager to read the next book.

Review: The Replaced by Kimberly Derting

This book wasn’t bad, but I definitely felt like it suffered a bit from middle book syndrome. I had a hard time remembering all that happened in the first book, so I spent a good portion of this book playing catch-up. However, by the second half of the book, I felt myself drawn back into the plot and caught up in the mysteries surrounding Kyra’s abduction.

The action took a bit to get started, but once it did, I couldn’t stop reading. I thought the author threw in some really unique plot twists and I didn’t see most of them coming. Kyra remained likable in the book and I like how she’s growing as a character by finding her own inner strength.

I liked the romance in the book. There is a love triangle, but it’s not annoying and I think it’s obvious who Kyra belongs with. The romance is actually not a major part of the plot and I hope to see a little more development in that area in the final book.

Overall, I liked the first book better, but The Replaced was a solid enough read to keep me invested and have me look forward to the final novel in the series.

For a steamy New Adult contemporary romance, I highly recommend Very Wicked Things. I read the first book in the series a while back, but each novel can be read as a standalone I believe since they feature different couples. Cuba and Dovey were a great couple with so much chemistry.

I really liked the romance in this book. I felt like Cuba and Dovey sizzled together in each scene they shared. Their relationship has a lot of angst, but I empathized with both of their situations. From the outside, their lives seemed so different, but I liked the way the author showed how each were facing their own unique struggles. 

The only thing I didn’t love was the good girl/man whore stuff. I don’t know why, but I think the dynamic is feeling a little tired for me. I still liked Cuba, but I’m just getting over how many books feature a reformed player.

I do really enjoy this series. After I already read the book, I realized there is a prequel. I’m thinking I should’ve picked it up to get more of a feel for Cuba since he only makes a quick cameo in Very Bad Things.

Adelia didn’t see it and caught the toe of her shoe on it. She didn’t fall, thank goodness, but she did stumble, slinging her full glass of ice water into Pepper’s lap.

With a cry of surprise and alarm, Pepper leapt out of her chair, holding her arms high to avoid the water that practically covered her from neck to knees.

“Four thousand!” Allison Price announced from the stage.

The MC’s words were an even larger shock to Pepper than the water. She turned her head toward Grant and the action onstage. He was looking straight at her with a wide smile of confidence across his face. He winked at her, and Pepper felt her stomach sink into her boot. Allison was pointing in Pepper’s direction, trying to coax a higher bid out of the audience.

Yes, please, she screamed in her head. Make it forty-five hundred. Hell, make it four thousand and one penny. Just outbid her. She was answered with deafening silence. The only one in the room making a sound was Allison up on stage. It seemed that suddenly, all the battling women seemed to give up. Even Grant wasn’t worth that much, it seemed, and she agreed.

“No!” Pepper shouted, but there was no stopping it.

“Going once . . . going twice . . .”

“I didn’t mean to—”

“Sold! To the lady in the blue sweaterdress, paddle twenty-two!”

Pepper looked down at her dark blue sweater, suddenly made even darker by the spreading water mark. Her damned paddle, the one she never wanted to begin with, was still in her hand. She watched as it slipped from her fingers, clattering to the ground in slow motion as the gravity of the situation caught up with her. Four thousand dollars. She’d just bid four thousand dollars. Because of well-aimed ice water.

“Oh, Pepper,” Miss Adelia fussed, dabbing her with an inadequate cocktail napkin and shaking off the well-meaning hands of the folks that were more concerned about the older woman nearly falling. “I am so sorry. I didn’t even see that silly cord,” she said. “Is your dress okay?”

She couldn’t respond. All Pepper could do was close her eyes and try to keep the tears of frustration and aggravation from rushing down her cheeks.

She had just paid four thousand dollars for a date with Grant Chamberlain.

I liked the author’s bestseller Across the Universe, but didn’t love the book as much as I hoped. That being said, I really enjoyed The Body Electric. I don’t know why, but I felt such a stronger connection to the characters than I had in her previous works.

The Body Electric is a companion work to Across the Universe, but can be enjoyed as a standalone. There are some mentions of the plotlines from the previous books, but this novel is more about what happens back on Earth while the spaceship is traveling.

I liked Ella a lot. She felt so very real to me. Revis wrote in her way where I felt every emotion as Ella experienced them. She is living in this fast-changing world while also having to deal with so much grief. Ella’s dedication to her mother touched me the most out of all the story elements. However I did also enjoy the romance in the book immensely.

I felt more suspense in this novel too and I loved some of the twists the authors threw in the final chapters. The pace was very fast, so my only complaint was it was hard to keep up at times when a whole new plot device was tossed in the mix. However, I did really like the book and would recommend it to readers of sci-fi lite books. The book is YA, but I felt like it had plenty of crossover appeal.

Review: Broken Skies by Theresa Kay

This was a great alien/human romance novel! I loved the main character and I thought the world building was so interesting. I’m definitely looking forward to the next installment to the series. Especially after the ending!

Jax really drew me in. I loved how I always felt her emotions in the story. She has gone through some horrible stuff, but she manages to stay strong and keep on surviving. Her voice felt authentic and I thought she dealt with the kidnapping of her brother in a brave way.

Lir was a solid love interest and I enjoyed never having a good read on him. At times, I wondered like Jax if he really was a good guy or not. My only complaint was I couldn’t really picture how Jax could be physically attractive to him (honestly I couldn’t get past the scales on his back).

The plot was fast moving, but I never felt like any parts were rushed. The alien and human societies were detailed, but I never felt like the author was giving too much away.

The ending left me with a lot of questions, so I’m eagerly waiting for the next book. Anyone who loves YA romances with a sci-fi twist will definitely enjoy Broken Skies.

Well, that was different! This was a novella-length story about a robot who wants to earn the right to love. I liked the concept behind the story, but because of the length, I never felt fully connected to Coral or Quinn.

Coral was a unique robotic character. She’s very curious and innocent, but also very blunt about her feelings regarding sex. Her only teacher is her promiscuous friend and she finds herself having conflicting emotions while dealing with Quinn, a man who had part of his body rebuilt because of injuries sustained during a war.

The futuristic world Coral is from was interesting as were the royals. But the world building was very vague since most of the story dealt with Coral’s sexual awakening. I think I just wanted more from the story. However, for a quick read, it did keep my interest.

This book was a lot darker than I thought. Almost to the point where I almost stopped reading because of how uncomfortable I felt. However, the suspense gripped me and I ended up getting caught up in the mystery aspects.

I love psychic books, so I liked that portion of the novel the best. I could feel for Ramie after finding out her powers come at such a high cost. Basically, she feels everything her subjects are going through and some of her experiences involve her being tortured. Ramie is a mess and she reaches out to Caleb for help.

Caleb is my favorite type of romance hero: handsome, brooding, complex. I didn’t like some of the decisions he made, but I tried to empathize. I did like how he tried to redeem himself and became uber-protective over Ramie.

There were a few jaw dropping twists. I honestly couldn’t put the book down during the final third of the story. Another plus was the sex scenes were very steamy. Slow Burn is a must-read for fans of adult paranormal romances with a twist.

I was looking for a new paranormal romance read and I was intrigued by Breathe for Me’s summary. It reminded me of Shatter Me, which is one of my favorite YA books ever. Breathe for Me was good, but lacked some of the edginess I expected.

Isabel was a good main character and I liked her unique perspective on the world. The paranormal aspects were well done and I felt for Isabel as she tried again and again to escape her curse.

The romance was pretty sappy. Normally, the sap can work for me, but I wasn’t feeling it as much as I hoped. Dominic wasn’t a bad hero per-se, but he didn’t come off as memorable to me. Especially since he’s the guy who Isabel is supposed to risk everything for to break her curse.

The climax was good and really elevated the story for me. I was happy with the way the author chose to end the book. I definitely appreciated that Breathe for Me is a standalone. I’d recommend the book to fans of YA paranormal romances.

I read a lot of dark and heavy stuff, so sometimes I need a lighter read. Something sweet and romantic just like Love’s Own Reward. I’ll admit it, I love the fluff sometimes! There is drama in the book, but not the kind that ties the reader in knots.

I liked the characters. I didn’t think I would connect with Charley, but she grew on me. I liked how she became less of a doormat as the story progressed. Jess was great too and I liked his complexity. He seemed really torn up over his budding feelings for Charley and trying to get his story.

The pace was a little slow at times, but I did like how their relationship developed. It had a natural feel. The conclusion was solid and I got my HEA.

Rating: 4/5 Stars
