Review: More Than This by Jay McLean

Summary:

When Mikayla imagined her prom night, she envisioned a fairy-tale evening full of romance. So when betrayal and tragedy come in quick succession, Mikayla is completely destroyed. Suddenly, everything she loved and everyone she relied on are tragically, irrevocably gone.

Jake, a handsome boy she just met, happens to witness her loss. With no one to turn to, Mikayla is forced to depend on this near stranger and his family, and he in turn is determined to take care of her. But Mikayla—thrust into adulthood with no one to guide her—is desperate to contain her grief and hide what she considers to be her weakness. Mikayla and Jake both want more, but despite their growing closeness and intense chemistry, she tries to keep her distance and protect her heart. As he does everything in his power to win her trust, Mikayla must choose between remaining alone and safe or letting love in.

Publication Date: July 10, 2013

Drama, drama, drama! That’s all I could think about when reading More Than This. I was so upset with the author for putting Mikayla through so much in such a short period of time! But the heartache kept me reading in hopes Mikayla would end up happy after all.

Mikayla had my sympathy because of all the tragedies she suffered, but I wouldn’t say she was my favorite character. I guess I just didn’t understand a lot of her insecurities. I also didn’t care for a lot of the petty jealousy stuff. But I did like that she had a bookish, introverted side.

Jake was all kinds of awesome. His character was designed to make the masses swoon. He’s the whole package: sweet, sexy, Australian accent… I loved the friendships he had too and how welcoming his group was to Mikayla.

The pace was good and I did finish the book quickly. I wished that some of the hardships Mikayla faced weren’t resolved in such convenient ways. Although I know she needed the support, it would’ve been nice to see her pick herself up off the floor once in a while.

The conclusion was amazing. I was really pleased with how the author wrapped up Mikayla and Jake’s story. There are more books in the series, so I am excited to check them out!

Review: As Night Falls by Jenny Milchman

Summary:

From the acclaimed author of Ruin Falls and Cover of Snowcomes a breathless new novel of psychological suspense about a dark, twisted turn of events that could shatter a family—a read perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, Chris Bohjalian, and Nancy Pickard.

Sandy Tremont has always tried to give her family everything. But, as the sky darkens over the Adirondacks and a heavy snowfall looms, an escaped murderer with the power to take it all away draws close.

In her isolated home in the shadowy woods, Sandy prepares dinner after a fight with her daughter, Ivy. Upstairs, the fifteen-year-old—smart, brave, and with every reason to be angry tonight—keeps her distance from her mother. Sandy’s husband, Ben, a wilderness guide, arrives late to find a home simmering with unease.

Nearby, two desperate men on the run make their way through the fading light, bloodstained and determined to leave no loose ends or witnesses. After almost twenty years as prison cellmates, they have become a deadly team: Harlan the muscle, Nick the mind and will. As they approach a secluded house and look through its windows to see a cozy domestic scene, Nick knows that here he will find what he’s looking for . . . before he disappears forever.

Opening the door to the Tremont home, Nick brings not only a legacy of terror but a secret that threatens to drag Sandy with him into the darkness.

Publication Date: June 30, 2015

Home abduction books scare the heck out of me! The scenario plays on some of my worst fears and I find the subject really difficult to read about. However, As Night Falls had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t wait to see who made it out of the house alive.

The setting was typical of home invasion books: the family lives in an isolated area with limited means of getting help when danger arrives. When two escaped convicts take the Tremonts hostage, the family is on their own in a fight for survival.

The characters were good and I liked that the chapters were told in alternating POVs between Sandy and Nick. The reader was able to get the perspective of both victim and villain. Sandy’s daughter Ivy was an irritating character, but she grew on me eventually.

I like psychological suspense books, but the pace felt a little slow for me at times. I was gripped most of the time, but there were sections where I didn’t feel as much intensity as the circumstances required.

The twist was unexpected and I didn’t see it coming. The conclusion was fairly good and I liked that the book could be read as a standalone. The author has several other thrillers set in the Adirondacks and I look forward to checking them out.

Review: Don't Get Me Wrong by Marianne Kavanagh

Summary:

For fans of Jojo Moyes, David Nicholls, and Sophie Kinsella, here is a Pride and Prejudice for the modern era: Londoners Kim and Harry can’t see eye to eye...until the life of the person they both love most hangs in the balance.

Kim and Harry are total opposites who happen to have the same favorite people in the world: Kim’s older sister, Eva, and her young son, Otis. Kim has never seen what her free-spirited big sister sees in a stuck-up banker like Harry and has spent her childhood trying to keep him out (must he always drive the most ostentatious cars and insist on charming everyone he meets?), while Harry’s favorite occupation is provoking Kim.

Both Harry and Kim are too stuck in their prejudices to care about what’s really going on beneath the surface of each other’s lives. They’ll never understand each other—until the worst of all tragedy strikes. Faced with the possibilities of losing the person they both love most, long-buried secrets come to a head in ways that will change both Harry and Kim forever.

As in her “hilarious, poignant, and profound” (Daily Mail) novel For Once in My Life, Marianne Kavanagh tackles the bonds of family, friendship, and love through sophisticated storytelling. Don’t Get Me Wrong is a witty and heartwarming book that will charm readers everywhere.

Publication Date: August 25, 2015

Don’t Get Me Wrong is a tough book to rate for me. On one hand, I couldn’t put the book down. On the other hand, I really didn’t like how the book concluded and the ending actually made me not like the rest of the story as much. There was so much build-up and then it just ended without delivering on the goods I had expected.

The characters were interesting and I really enjoyed the dynamic between Eva and Harry. I understood how Kim felt like an outsider when the three were together, but some of her reactions were way over the top. I was actually waiting for her to get a good slap across the face and for someone to tell her to wake up and stop acting so bratty.

Harry was great and the scenes told from his POV were my favorite. I think the author did an amazing job with character development. I honestly felt like I was reading about people I knew. I felt so close to the characters, I could begin to anticipate their reactions by the novel’s end.

The pace was fairly good. Some of Kim’s work drama was a little boring to me, but her struggles in her career was part of her overall growth. There were some very sad parts and I did feel myself getting teary-eyed from time to time.

I was really into the story up until the end. I felt totally unsatisfied after pages and pages of “will they?” or “won’t they?” I’d be hesitant to recommend the novel on this basis alone.

Although I didn’t like the ending, I was hooked by the author’s writing and will check out more of her work.

Review: That One Night by Josie Wright

Summary:

All it takes is just one moment to change the course of your life. For me, it was one perfect night.
I have always had a thing for my brother’s best friend, Ben. When I found him on my parents’ couch, drowning his sorrows in a whiskey bottle, my attempts to comfort him quickly turned into a night of raw and intense passion.
My foolish heart hoped he might feel the same way I do.
But Ben wasn’t there to stay and I woke up the next morning alone with a broken heart.
I attempted to forget the guy with a smile to die for and a touch that sets me on fire.
I thought I was over him.
I thought he was gone forever.
Until, eighteen months later Ben returns and learns my secret. Now, he is hell-bent on winning me back.
He plays dirty.
And he won’t stop until he gets what he wants—me.

But he has secrets of his own.
Secrets that could destroy everything we might have and everything we are.

Publication Date: July 2015

Wow, what an incredible debut! I loved That One Night hard. The characters were just so great—very far from the cookie cutter types that have a tendency to pop up in romances. The author is super talented and I can’t wait to read more of her future work.

The adjective that comes to mind when describing Frankie is ballsy. She speaks her mind and is fiercely protective of the people she cares about. She had no many great comebacks that I wished I could channel her from time to time in my own life. Frankie has been through a lot in her young life and has a very world wise quality about her.

Since the book is told in Frankie’s point of view, Ben is a bit of an enigma. I liked him a lot from the get go and I was dying to know why he ran after he spent the night with Frankie. When his secrets are eventually revealed, I was floored. I’m normally fairly good at guessing twists, but not in this case.

Although there is a ton of drama, especially in the final third of the book, That One Night is certainly a character-driven book. The author’s writing made me care about the characters and root for Ben and Frankie to get past their issues and make it work. The romance felt very real to me and I think the fact that Frankie was a young mother was very central to the plot. She made very smart decisions because of her protectiveness of her son.

Fans of contemporary romances will adore That One Night. The writing is beautiful, the sex scenes steamy and the angst off the charts.

Review: Winning Miss Wakefield by Vivienne Lorret

Summary:

She's got nothing left to lose…

With her fiancé suddenly engaged to another and her reputation in tatters, Merribeth Wakefield needs a bold plan to reclaim her life. She must be brave. Confident. She must … kiss a rake? The suggestion is ludicrous! Yet when Merribeth finds herself alone with the dark and brooding Lord Knightswold, suddenly the plan doesn't seem so farfetched. So she does something she never thought she'd do—she kisses him.

But he has everything to gain…

The Marquess of Knightswold—Bane to most—has no use for the affections of women. Well, none lasting longer than a single night. A plot for revenge weighs heavy on his mind, leaving no room for romance. But then a shy, witty miss borrows a kiss from him in a darkened room, and everything he thought he knew about innocent debutantes vanishes along with her.

When a twist of fate brings Merribeth within Bane's grasp, he'll have to resist her charms—or risk losing everything—for the sake of his heart.

Publication Date: June 10, 2014

I loved Winning Miss Wakefield! What a great story with characters I fell in love with from the very first pages. Bane was such a tortured soul, I just wanted to reach through the book and shake him. I loved how he changed after a chance meeting with Merribeth. The two of them had serious chemistry.

Books like Winning Miss Wakefield are the reason I kick myself for not reading more historical romances. I was hooked from the beginning and enjoyed everything about the novel: the setting, the characters, the pace. Everything just worked in the book and I couldn’t wait to see if Merribeth and Bane would get their happily ever after.

Merribeth has the best transformation over the course of the book. She starts off as a mopey and heartbroken character who can’t seem to get over the fact her pseudo fiancé has fallen in love with another. But when she meets Bane, she starts to realize that what she had before with her fiancé was not love.

Bane’s single drive is for revenge. He hates his dead grandfather so much for his family’s mistreatment that he vows to never marry and never have any children. He wants his family name to die with him. I felt for Bane as he must decide if revenge is more important than love.

I loved the back and forth between Bane and Merribeth. They obviously love each other, but their issues keep them from making it work. Besides Bane’s revenge plans and Merribeth’s former fiancé, the couple must face the scheming of Bane’s aunt. I actually didn’t like the aunt character at all and didn’t get the bets between her and Bane. The bets seemed like a convenient plot device to move things along.

I can’t wait to read more from the author! Fans of historical romances should definitely pick up a copy today.

Review: The Cage by Megan Shepherd

Summary:

The Maze Runner meets Scott Westerfeld in this gripping new series about teens held captive in a human zoo by an otherworldly race. From Megan Shepherd, the acclaimed author of The Madman's Daughter trilogy.

When Cora Mason wakes in a desert, she doesn't know where she is or who put her there. As she explores, she finds an impossible mix of environments—tundra next to desert, farm next to jungle, and a strangely empty town cobbled together from different cultures—all watched over by eerie black windows. And she isn't alone.

Four other teenagers have also been taken: a beautiful model, a tattooed smuggler, a secretive genius, and an army brat who seems to know too much about Cora's past. None of them have a clue as to what happened, and all of them have secrets. As the unlikely group struggles for leadership, they slowly start to trust each other. But when their mysterious jailer—a handsome young guard called Cassian—appears, they realize that their captivity is more terrifying than they could ever imagine: Their captors aren't from Earth. And they have taken the five teenagers for an otherworldly zoo—where the exhibits are humans.

As a forbidden attraction develops between Cora and Cassian, she realizes that her best chance of escape might be in the arms of her own jailer—though that would mean leaving the others behind. Can Cora manage to save herself and her companions? And if so . . . what world lies beyond the walls of their cage?

Publication Date: May 26, 2015

The Cage was a really crazy book. I actually thought the book was going in a totally different direction before the big reveal about the human zoo. I liked the direction the story took, but I did find my interest waning from time to time while I was reading.

The characters were a mixed bag, but I did like the protagonist Cora. She was a good narrator and the chapters told in her point of view were probably my favorites. Lucky was just okay for me, so I didn’t really care for the romance potential with him and Cora. I wasn’t a fan of the love triangle either that develops later on in the book.

The human zoo aspect was thought provoking. I definitely think it brought attention to issues with keeping animals in captivity. The only problem with the plot is it made the pace slow. The characters didn’t normally do too much accept wander around and plot a pointless escape.

The story felt long, but finally picked up during the final quarter. The ending elevated the book enough that I’d likely pick up the sequel to see where Shepherd takes the story.

Review: What a Wallflower Wants by Maya Rodale

Summary:

In the third novel in Maya Rodale's charming Wallflower series, London's Least Likely to Be Caught in a Compromising Position finds temptation in a devilishly handsome stranger . . .

Miss Prudence Merryweather Payton has a secret.

Everyone knows that she's the only graduate from her finishing school to remain unwed on her fourth season—but no one knows why. With her romantic illusions shattered after being compromised against her will, Prudence accepts a proposal even though her betrothed is not exactly a knight in shining armor. When he cowardly pushes her out of their stagecoach to divert a highwayman, she vows never to trust another man again.

John Roark, Viscount Castleton, is nobody's hero.

He's a blue-eyed charmer with a mysterious past and ambitious plans for his future—that do not include a wife. When he finds himself stranded at a country inn with a captivating young woman, a delicate dance of seduction ensues. He knows he should keep his distance. And he definitely shouldn't start falling in love with her.

When Prudence's dark past comes back to haunt her, John must protect her—even though he risks revealing his own secrets that could destroy his future.

Publication Date: September 30, 2014
The books in the Bad Boys & Wallflowers series have been very enjoyable historical romances to read. Although What a Wallflower Wants wasn’t my favorites of the series, I still liked Prue’s story. The book was much darker than the previous novels and some of the plotlines were tough to stomach.

Prue has been through a lot, but she still has a lot of fight in her. She has a tough side to her, but also a very fragile side. She is trying her best to figure out the ideal circumstances for a woman in her situation while being stranded at an inn with John—a viscount with his own secrets.

John was great. He was very sweet and gentle with Prue. After what Prue has gone through, I think an alpha type of male lead would’ve had her running for the hills. Their relationship moves very slowly to give Prue time to realize that not all men are like the man she refers to as The Beast.

The pace would’ve been better without so many flashbacks. Some of the flashbacks were purposeful to the story while others not so much. My only other complaint was after the severe trauma of Prue’s past, I would’ve hoped for more emotional resonance to come through.

Overall, a good book that explores how difficult it was for women to handle sexual assault in the regency era.

Review: Broken by Lauren Layne

Summary:

Lauren Layne’s New Adult novel tells the story of a girl with secrets, a guy with scars, and a love that could save them both... or destroy them.

When Olivia Middleton abandons the glamour of Park Avenue for a remote, coastal town in Maine, everyone assumes she’s being the kind do-gooder she’s always been. But Olivia has a secret: helping an injured war veteran reenter society isn’t about charity—it’s about penance. Only, Olivia’s client isn’t the grateful elderly man she’s expecting. Instead, he’s a brooding twenty-four-year-old who has no intention of being Olivia’s path to redemption . . . and whose smoldering gaze and forbidden touch might be her undoing.

Paul Langdon doesn’t need a mirror to show him he’s no longer the hotshot quarterback he was before the war. He knows he’s ugly—inside and out. He’ll do anything to stay in self-imposed exile, even accept his father’s ultimatum that Paul tolerate the newest caretaker for three months or lose his inheritance. But Paul doesn’t count on the beautiful twenty-two-year-old who makes him long for things that he can never have. And the more she slips past his defenses, the more keeping his distance is impossible.

Now Paul and Olivia have to decide: Will they help each other heal? Or are they forever broken?

Publication Date: September 2, 2014

Broken was so good!!! I loved the plot, loved the characters and I can’t wait to read more from the author. I’ve been really into damaged hero books lately and Broken was one of the best ones I’ve read in a long time.

I liked the female lead Olivia right away. She has her issues: she’s grown up entitled and has never had to own up to her mistakes. As a way to remedy her sins, she takes on a caretaking job for an injured vet named Paul.

Paul isn’t your typical dreamy romance lead. He’s scarred from war—both physically and mentally. Paul has so much hate inside of him and I was really hoping he’d eventually let Olivia in as a way to heal from the past. Olivia and Paul had so much chemistry that the pages sizzled each time they were together.

I sped through this book. The pace was exceptional and I never felt the plot drag at all. Because Paul and Olivia are pretty isolated, the sole focus was mostly on his recovery and her quest for redemption. This kept the story from getting bogged down with too many subplots.

I liked the resolution although I did want a little more. I didn’t want to say goodbye to these characters that I fell in love with! I saw there are standalone spin-offs, so I’m hoping the duo pop up again.

Reviews: My Daylight Monsters and Mary Hades by Sarah Dalton

Summary:

I always thought my demons came out in the day, rather than at night. I’ve never been scared of the dark. I’ve only ever been scared of real things: getting ill, having injections, physical pain… death. Those are my monsters, not ghosts or vampires or whatever else can hide under your bed at night.

I was wrong.

The dark makes everything worse.

When Mary’s psychiatrist advises a short stay at a psychiatric unit, her worst nightmares are confirmed. How can she get better in a place that fills her with dread? When she meets the other patients, she begins to gather some hope, until she realises that the death toll in the hospital is rising without explanation. Something sinister stalks the corridors and maybe she is the only one who can stop it…

Mary has to confront the Things that she sees if they are to stand a chance. But will she survive a confrontation with death itself?

Publication Date: October 2013

This was a good introduction to the Mary Hades series. I really liked the main character and I thought the novella gave just the perfect amount of background info before picking up the first book in the series. Honestly, I think I’d be a little lost if I had started Mary Hades before reading My Daylight Monsters. I also enjoyed that the central mystery of the book was resolved in a satisfying way.

Summary:

Not many seventeen year old girls have a best friend who’s a ghost, but then Mary Hades isn’t your average teenager.

Scarred physically and mentally from a fire, her parents decide a holiday to an idyllic village in North Yorkshire will help her recover. Nestled in the middle of five moors, Mary expects to have a boring week stuck in a caravan with her parents. Little does she know, evil lurks in the campsite…

Seth Lockwood—a local fairground worker with a dark secret—might be the key to uncovering the murky history that has blighted Nettleby. But Mary is drawn to him in a way that has her questioning her judgement.

Helped by her dead best friend and a quirky gay Goth couple, Mary must stop the unusual deaths occurring in Nettleby. But can she prevent her heart from being broken?

The first in a series of dark YA novels, Mary Hades follows on from the bestselling Kindle Single 'My Daylight Monsters'. A spine-tingling tale with romance, readers will be shocked and entertained in equal measure.

Publication Date: May 4, 2014

I picked up Mary Hades right after finishing My Daylight Monsters so I was fully immersed in the story. I do recommend reading the novella first in order to get an adequate introduction to Mary’s predicament and how she ended up with a ghost for a best friend.

I liked the camp setting since it was both humorous and spooky. There was a lot of mystery surrounding the locals and I was just as curious as Mary about the cause of the freakish deaths. I got a few scares while reading, but I liked that the story is more spooky than gory.

I liked Mary again in this book and really liked the introduction of Seth. They had a really sweet relationship. Nothing too heavy happens in the book, so this book is definitely appropriate for younger teen readers.

I wasn’t crazy about the ending, but there are sequels so I guess I’m intrigued enough to read more books in the series.

Extension was so much more than I expected! I really loved the story and I especially fell in love with the characters. Fans of YA sci-fi books must add this book to their to-be-read piles.

The beginning of Extension threw me off a little and I actually didn’t know if the book would work for me. There wasn’t anything wrong with the beginning, but I assumed the rest of the book would be heavy with the sci-fi stuff (I’m more into sci-fi/fantasy lite books). I’m so glad I kept reading because I truly enjoyed the storyline. The pace was great and I never grew bored with the plot. The sci-fi elements were there, but they never overwhelmed the story.

The book is told in two points of view: Oliver and Colby. I could tell from the get go that the two have some sort of connection and I was intrigued over how the author planned to tie their stories together. Colby was AMAZING! Loved his character.

The biggest surprise for me about the book was how funny it turned out to be. I loved the dark humor in Colby’s chapters and I found myself giggling more than once while reading.

Extension is a must read for both adults and teens!
