Review: Taint by S.L. Jennings

Summary:

"Right now, you're probably asking yourself two things: Who am I? and What the hell are you doing here? Let's start with the most obvious question, shall we? You're here, ladies, because you can't f*ck."

Oh, stop it. Don't cringe. No one under the age of eighty clutches her pearls. You might as well get used to it, because for the next six weeks, you're going to hear that word a lot. And you're going to say it a lot. Go ahead, try it out on your tongue. F*ck. F***ck.

Okay, good. Now, where were we?

If you enrolled yourself in this program, then you are wholly aware that you're a lousy lay. Good for you. Admitting it is half the battle. For those of you who have been sent here by your husband or significant other, dry your tears and get over it. You've been given a gift, ladies. The gift of mind-blowing, wall-climbing, multiple-orgasm-inducing sex. You have the opportunity to f*ck like a porn star. And I guarantee that you will when I'm done with you.

And who am I?

Well, for the next six weeks, I will be your lover, your teacher, your best friend, and your worst enemy. Your every-f*cking-thing. I'm the one who is going to save your relationship and your sex life.

I am Justice Drake. And I turn housewives into whores. Now . . . who's first?

Publication Date: October 14, 2014

Taint was definitely a page-turner and I thought the premise was unlike any I’ve ever read before. The story is told in Justice’s point of view (sadly his real name isn’t Taint) and I found the behind the scenes drama at his resort a lot of fun to read about.

Justice was a confusing character. He came across as a cocky a-hole at the beginning, but does almost a 180 when Ally comes into the picture. Although I didn’t necessarily want him to continue being jerk, I felt like his transformation was almost too much to believe.

Ally wasn’t a bad character and some of her quirky qualities were endearing. The cheating didn’t rub me the wrong way like other books since infidelity was abound. However, I just didn’t buy into the whole idea that these gold-digging women needed a better sexual education to keep their husbands from straying.

The erotic parts were hot and being inside Justice’s head was fun at times. I liked that the entire book is told from his point of view. Overall, a good read for someone looking for a non-traditional sexy romance.

Review: Untouched by Lauren Hawkeye

Summary:

Alexa Kendrick has no recollection of the car accident that left her scarred and sent her life careening wildly off course. When the half-sister she thought she’d never meet shows up at her door with an invitation to a new life, Alexa finds herself in Florence, Arizona, a town notorious for being populated with more prison inmates than actual citizens…a town that has done its best to hide its own dark secret.

After Ellie is called out of town, she leaves her sister with the keys to her flower shop and Alexa finds herself swapping lives with her sibling: running Ellie’s business, living in the house left to them both by their absentee father…and forging a smoldering relationship with sexy-as-sin penitentiary officer, Nate Fury—a man with his own demons.

But arranging flowers by day and tangling with the only man who has ever seen her real self by night isn’t enough to silence the mysterious panic that fuels Alexa’s dark dreams. When Nate brings home a book written by an inmate, one describing an unspeakable crime, the shackles binding Alexa’s own lost memories begin to shatter. And as the devastating truth comes to light, she realizes that Nate holds the key to unlocking her past, as well as her heart.

Publication Date: December 9, 2014

Untouched was a quick and enjoyable romantic read! I really liked the two leads of the story: Nate and Alexa. The author made me feel an innocent connection to them and I found myself rooting for them early on. Both characters have a lot of trauma in their pasts and I found myself touched by how they helped heal one another.

My only complaint was the speed of the romance. I prefer a little more build-up. Although I wouldn’t say insta-love, they did seem to fall way too quick. However, I still thought they made a sweet couple.

I actually loved the setting in the book. I felt the small-town situated next to a prison helped add to the central mystery. My favorite portions of the book were Alexa trying to unravel the secrets in her family’s past.

Overall, Untouched was a great contemporary romance from an author who has a knack for descriptive, ethereal writing.

Review: The Audition by Tara Crescent

Summary:

Ever since she was a child, Allie Greenwall has wanted to get into Juilliard. But she hasn’t played the piano in six years, and she is hopelessly rusty. Her only hope of passing her audition rests with reclusive Russian pianist Nikolai Zhednov.

But Nikolai is no longer the man she knew, and in his dungeon, Allie realizes that his help will come at a high cost, one she’s not sure she can pay.

Note: This story contains a Dominant pianist who will use harsh discipline to ensure that Allie reaches her fullest potential, many erotic sexual and BDSM scenes, and a Happy-For-Now ending.

Publication Date: December 9, 2014

I’m not going to give The Audition a rating because I’m a little stumped. I actually thought the book was more of a romance than just mostly BDSM. I don’t read a lot of erotica, but in that area, The Audition was well done. The sex scenes were hot and very detailed. But I didn’t feel anything emotionally for the characters or their relationship. Also, the book felt more like a short story than a novella. BDSM erotica readers will likely enjoy The Audition, but the book just isn’t from one of my favorite genres.

Review: Snapped by Ketley Allison

Goodreads Summary:

This series contains feelings after sex, good girls staying good (unless they don’t want to), good boys turning bad, great friends flipping sides, close lovers falling backwards, sassy mouths, stubborn jackasses, and a fight for the one, all in the name of f*cked up love.

But whose love is twisted?

In nine weeks Charlie Miller's life goes from high-rolling perfection to a crypt of sin. All it takes is one night, one blade, and her boyfriend, best friend and new friends all either end up as suspects or dead.

Nate Westcott, a pierced, tattooed, charismatic lawyer, is a man she can’t have—but a seductive danger she can’t ignore. He’s cocky, infuriating, brilliant and wrong, yet he makes her question whether she really is the good girl she wants to be or more like the selfish killer everyone thinks she is.

And her body wants him in ways she’s not supposed to crave.

As the weeks close in, cracks start forming in her everyday world of pro football golden boys, law school domination and New York City nightlife. Everyone she cares about is at risk because one of them doesn’t love Charlie back. In fact, they want her out of the way. Disposed of. Set up.

One more step, and all Charlie has to do is fall through.

Week 1 starts now.

WHO WILL SNAP?

Snapped is Ketley’s New Adult Novella series with all the romance you’d expect, but the killer—and lovers—that you don’t.

Publication Date: November 1, 2014

This novella was definitely entertaining! The author is very talented at teasing out the plot to make a reader keep turning the pages. The prologue was especially enjoyable and an actual reminder of why I really love prologues (I understand not all readers do).

Without giving too much away, the characters are an interesting, albeit messed-up group, who have secrets between them. Although the central plot is a murder mystery, there’s a lot of light-hearted spots and humor.

I have a tendency to avoid serials like the plague, but the author seems to be publishing each installment without fail on the first of each month and pricing them at $0.99. I may wait for all of the novellas to be released, but will likely end up reading them to find out what’s in store for Charlie and her friends.

Review: The Creeping by Alexandra Sirowy

Summary:

Twelve years ago Stella and Jeanie vanished while picking strawberries. Stella returned minutes later, with no memory of what happened. Jeanie was never seen or heard from again.

Now Stella is seventeen, and she's over it. She's the lucky one who survived, and sure, the case is still cloaked in mystery—and it's her small town's ugly legacy—but Stella is focused on the coming summer. She's got a great best friend, a hookup with an irresistibly crooked smile, and two months of beach days stretching out before her.

Then along comes a corpse, a little girl who washes up in an ancient cemetery after a mudslide, and who has red hair just like Jeanie did. Suddenly memories of that haunting day begin to return, and when Stella discovers that other red-headed girls have gone missing as well, she begins to suspect that something sinister is at work.

And before the summer ends, Stella will learn the hard way that if you hunt for monsters, you will find them.

Publication Date: August 18, 2015

In the end, I liked The Creeping much more than I expected to. This is a book where I would tell readers to keep reading because the plot gets so much better as the story goes on. By mid-point, I felt myself getting super spooked by the plot.

The Creeping is unique because I liked not knowing exactly if the evil lurking in Stella’s town was real or imaginary. Even by the end, I wasn’t one hundred percent certain who the true monsters were. The pace felt a little slow in the first few chapters, but picked up tremendously as the mysteries started unraveling.

Stella grew on me as the story progressed. Her and her friends were a little annoying at first, but Stella eventually becomes a character I could root for. I think my feelings for her changed once the romance between her and Sam blossomed. I loved the two of them as a couple.

Although the romance was sweet, I definitely was more into the mystery of Janie. I thought I had it all figured out, but the author threw a curveball at the end. I love when an author surprises the reader completely.

Fans of YA mysteries with a touch of horror will definitely like The Creeping.

Guest Review: Dancing with Molly by Lena Horowitz

Summary:

Before, I was never the life of the party. I was the reliable one. The one no one had to worry about. The one no one had to think about. I was the one that everyone could ignore.

Until that night, when everything changed and I finally became someone.

Someone special.

Someone noticeable.

Someone Carson might actually care about, as much as I cared about him.

But the cost of being someone is more than anyone can imagine. For every moment, there’s a price to pay. For every party. For every choice made. For every kiss.

Ultimately, living a life of PURE ECSTASY might be no different from not living at all.

Publication Date: June 2, 2015

Jessica's Guest Review:

Holy geez, that was one hell of a story. I don't condone drug use and unprotected sex, but those parts are what made the story. I loved how it was written journal style and how she wrote everything she was feeling, good and bad, as it really allows the reader to feel as though they are experiencing it too. The ending was sad and made me cry, so get some tissues handy! Worth reading, for sure!

Review: Vanished by Elizabeth Heiter

Goodreads Summary:

Sometimes the past can haunt you...

Eighteen years ago, FBI profiler Evelyn Baine s best friend, Cassie Byers, disappeared, the third in a series of unsolved abductions. Only a macabre nursery rhyme was left at the scene, a nursery rhyme that claimed Evelyn was also an intended victim. Now, after all these years of silence, another girl has gone missing in South Carolina, and the Nursery Rhyme Killer is taking credit. But is Cassie s abductor really back, or is there a copycat at work?

Sometimes the past is best forgotten...

Evelyn has waited eighteen years for a chance to investigate, but when she returns to Rose Bay, she finds a dark side to the seemingly idyllic town. As the place erupts in violence and the kidnapper strikes again, Evelyn knows this is her last chance. If she doesn t figure out what happened to Cassie eighteen years ago, it may be Evelyn s turn to vanish without a trace.

Publication Date: December 30, 2014

At first, Vanished felt like a very formulaic novel—not necessarily a bad thing, but just not a book that would stick out in my head after reading. However, the author threw in some plot twists that elevated the suspense novel and made me eager to check out more in the series.

From the beginning chapter, I really felt myself get invested in the story of the Nursery Rhyme Killer and Evelyn’s connection to the decades old case. I liked the shifts from past to present, especially being inside the head of the suspect. Evelyn’s return to her old hometown was also an interesting part of the plot.

The author kept me guessing and I didn’t see the end coming. Once the big reveal is made, I could see some of the small clues left along the way. The pace was quick and I never felt like the book dragged. My only complaint would be for a little more romance. The novel wasn’t as steamy as I would’ve liked it to be. However, I’d still recommend the book. Vanished is the second book featuring Evelyn, but can be read as a standalone.

Review: One Wish Away by Kelley Lynn

Summary:

Be careful what you wish for…

Lyra has always been ahead of the curve. Top of her class in school, a budding astronomer, and with a best friend like Darren she barely has time to miss the mother who abandoned her family years ago. She's too busy planning to follow in her father's footsteps, and to become the youngest astronomer at Space Exploration and Discovery.

When a star goes missing Lyra is determined to get to the bottom of it only to discover her braniac dad is the mastermind of a top-secret government experiment. They promise to build a perfect world, one galaxy at a time, but with every tweak of the present, a bit more of the future starts to crumble.

Lyra has to go undercover to reveal the truth and let humanity decide if the consequences are worth more than wishing on a star.

Publication Date: November 24, 2014

One Wish Away was a quick read with a mysterious premise: why are the stars in the sky starting to disappear? Lyra decides to unravel the mystery that is somehow related to her dad’s work at a scientific lab.

One Wish Away had interesting characters and I especially liked Lyra’s best friend Darren. They had a cute dynamic and I thought it was sweet the way he tries to care for his struggling family. Lyra wasn’t a bad character, but she made a few rash decisions that made me question her brainiac status.

I’m not sure I love the direction the story went in. It was way out there and I think the plot would be more appealing to a much younger audience. I just couldn’t buy into the story after the reveal. But tweens might really get into the story.

The ending left a lot of room open for a sequel. The book may not have been for me, but like I said, I’m not exactly in the ideal age range for the story. I think younger teens will have a lot of fun imagining the possibility of “wishing upon a star.”

Publication Date: August 26, 2014

Jessica's Review:

I really liked this book. I'm not sure I'd rush out to buy it or even read it again, but I would definitely recommend it to my friends. I loved the whole mystery aspect and the way Chloe was able to see what happened in the past. I don't generally like to read scary books, but this one was just right and was scary enough to keep the reader wanting more. I'm not sure I'll look at a lake the same again.

Review: Down from the Mountain by Elizabeth Fixmer

Summary:

Eva just wants to be a good disciple of Righteous Path. She grew up knowing that she's among the chosen few to be saved from Armageddon. Lately, though, being saved feels awfully treacherous. Ever since they moved to the compound in Colorado, their food supplies have dwindled even while their leader, Ezekiel, has stockpiled weapons. The only money comes from the jewelry Eva makes and sells down in Boulder--a purpose she'll serve until she becomes one of Ezekiel's wives. But a college student named Trevor and the other "heathens" she meets on her trips beyond the compound are far different from what she's been led to believe. Now Eva doesn't know which is more dangerous--the outside world, or Brother Ezekiel's plans.

Publication Date: March 1, 2015

I’ve had an interest in cults for some time, so I was looking forward to reading Down from the Mountain. I think the book has a powerful message and I liked reading a novel from the unique perspective of a brainwashed teenager.

Eva was very easy to connect with. Although she has been raised inside of a cult with radical ideas about the end of the world and living a righteous life, she doesn’t readily accept everything told her to by the group and the cult leader. I grew to like her even more as she started interacting with people outside of her sect.

This book is well researched and felt very authentic. The author delved into the psyche of a cult member and what it takes to mentally break away from a sect. Eva is only fourteen and I felt her young age made a lot of the cult activities truly shocking. I definitely felt very uncomfortable with the thought of the cult women as breeders for the leader Ezekiel.

Down from the Mountain isn’t in my normal reading genre, but I’m glad I took a chance on the book. The story is haunting while also being a powerful coming of age tale.

Review: The Kill List by Nichole Christoff

Summary:

As a top private eye turned security specialist, Jamie Sinclair has worked hard to put her broken marriage behind her. But when her lying, cheating ex-husband, army colonel Tim Thorp, calls with the news that his three-year-old daughter has been kidnapped, he begs Jamie to come find her. For the sake of the child, Jamie knows she can’t refuse. Now, despite the past, she’ll do everything in her power to bring little Brooke Thorp home alive.

Soon Jamie is back at Fort Leeds—the army base in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens where she grew up, the only child of a two-star general—chasing down leads and forging an uneasy alliance with the stern military police commander and the exacting FBI agent working Brooke’s case. But because Jamie’s father is now a U.S. senator, her recent run-in with a disturbed stalker is all over the news, and when she starts receiving gruesome threats echoing the stalker’s last words, she can’t shake the feeling that her investigation may be about more than a missing girl—and that someone very powerful is hiding something very significant . . . and very sinister.

Publication Date: December 2, 2014

The Kill List was a great romantic suspense novel. The tension was spot on in the book and I finished the book in less than a day because I was so caught up in the kidnapping plot.

Jamie was a great lead character. I thought she’d grate on me at first because the author made it seem like every male character fell madly in love with her at first sight. But once the romance became more focused, I got more into the relationship part of the book.

I did like that Jamie was a strong and smart female lead. She has her issues and I thought her perceived flaws gave her a much-needed softness. Her relationships with her dad and ex-husband also made her a sympathetic lead.

Reading about Jamie’s race to save a little girl’s life made the book a very intense read. I thought the twists thrown in during the final chapters of the book elevated the thriller for me. I always love when an author can keep me guessing. This is the first book I’ve read by the author, but it definitely won’t be the last.

Review: Fight Dirty by C.J. Lyons

Summary:

Raised to kill by her father, a convicted serial killer, Morgan s problems aren t those of the average teen. She wants only one thing: to protect her freedom and not get locked away. So, despite ongoing temptation and a bloody past, Morgan swears off murder.

Seeking to tame her sociopathic instincts, Morgan cons her way into working with security consultants Jenna Galloway and Andre Stone. For their first case, Morgan goes undercover to infiltrate ReNew, a treatment center for troubled teens, to investigate the suicide of a fourteen-year-old girl sent there by her wealthy parents.

While Jenna and Andre search for evidence from the outside, Morgan endures her own worst nightmare posing as an inmate. It isn t long before she discovers that ReNew s unstable patients are the ones who are really in charge and that some of their psychopathic tendencies rival her own.

Even if Morgan can discover the truth behind the girl s death and escape ReNew alive, what or who might be waiting for her on the outside?

Publication Date: October 7, 2014

Fight Dirty was definitely an action-packed read! I’ve never read the author before, but I would certainly pick up more from her. I thought the author did a good job making a bloodthirsty teenager someone readers could root for as she infiltrates a corrupt treatment center for troubled teens.

The action starts early and the book is full of suspense. Although the book has been advertised as a standalone, I probably would recommend reading the other books in the series first. I think I missed a lot of character development that would’ve helped me better understand Morgan, Jenna and Andre.

Despite feeling a little lost from time to time, I did like the overall plot of the novel. I wanted to find out what was going on at the treatment facility. Some of the stuff going on a ReNew was really sick. Fight Dirty is extremely violent and some of the scenes made me queasy.

I’m intrigued by the series and I’ll probably pick up another book by the author. However, I did like that the book had a solid conclusion. Morgan is only fifteen, but her maturity and intelligence makes the book have crossover appeal to both adult suspense readers and young adults.

Review: First Contact by Kat Green

Summary:

Sloane Osbourne is a paranormal realtor in the business of selling haunted houses but, in truth, she's only searching for one ghost. And her time is running out. It's the 366th day after her fiance's death. Michael used to like putting things off for "a year and a day"-so tonight's the night. Sloane will do anything to make contact with him before the clock strikes midnight. When she gets a call to check out a home in Waukesha, Wisconsin, it's the last place she thinks Michael would contact her. Sloane is dead wrong. Michael appears...and tells her to get out of the house. Immediately.
Publication Date: August 15, 2014

First Contact has such an awesome premise! I loved the idea of someone being hired as a paranormal real estate agent. I really enjoyed Sloane’s character and her drive to be reunited with her dead fiancé Michael.

What I loved most about First Contact was the relationship between Sloane and Michael. I could feel Sloane’s heartbreak and I thought the “year and a day” reunion was a sweet setup. Things turn scary for Sloane while reaching Michael from beyond the grave and that was when the story picked up.

First Contact was a short and fast-paced read. The book is a good setup for sequels, but also offered a satisfying conclusion.

Guest Review: Fall With Me by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Summary:

Eleven months ago, bartender and weird-shirt-wearing extraordinaire Roxy and Officer Reece Anders had a one night stand. Well, kind of. She’s been in love with him since she was fifteen, and he wishes that night they shared never happened. She’s sworn him off forever, but the past and future collide, forcing her to rely on the one man who broke her heart not once, but twice.

Her best friend since birth has been in a long-term care facility since he became a victim of a hate crime years ago, and the person who put him in there is out of prison and wanting to make amends with him and Roxy. She’s not sure she has room for forgiveness in her and when she begins to receive frightening messages and is on the receiving end of escalating violence, she thinks she knows who is to blame. The man who already destroyed one life already.

But Reece isn’t convinced. The threats are too personal, and even if Roxy doesn’t believe him, he’s not willing to let anyone hurt her. Including himself. He’s already messed up more than once when it comes to Roxy and he’s not going to let history repeat itself.

Jessica's Review:

I am a huge fan of Jennifer Armentrout and I have most of her books, but I had hard time getting into this one. The characters were great and the storyline was definitely there, but there was just something that fell flat for me. I was also able to guess the identity of the stalker pretty early on, so that might have been it.

Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
