“I’m sorry,” I managed. “I know you probably don’t believe me, but I am so sorry that things turned out the way they did—”

He nodded although his tone remained dry and unfriendly. “You should have fun on the vacation. And if you want to hook up with someone, don’t feel awkward about it… I’m not planning to be a saint on the trip either.”

I could see the knife he had just used to cut out my heart—the serrated edges dripping with fresh blood. Hope had damned me to my own personal hell. Because as tough as I had played it for my friends’ benefits, the god’s honest truth was I had wished for him to see me and feel something again. Like he would look into my eyes and see directly into my heart.

His dangling of our renewed friendship was only a ruse. This was his true purpose. He wanted me to know I’d have to bear witness to him fucking whomever he wanted on vacation. I’d hurt him and he was outlining his plans for revenge against me. For the next seven days, I’d have my heart stomped on each time I saw him with another girl.

Besides playing guitar, Cole was a union steelworker. The combination left his hands rough and callused. There was something so intoxicating about how masculine his hands felt when he grasped at my bare skin.

“Casey, you were the one who said months ago that neither of us were ready for a commitment. I’m not being an asshole here. I could’ve told everyone about why we broke up, but I didn’t. I let them assume you just wanted to walk away and I didn’t stop you.”

I patted his shoulder heartily. “Thanks for being so grown up about it, Cole. I didn’t know you had it in you.”

He folded his arms across his chest and looked me up and down. I didn’t like the smug look on his face as he caught my eye. His face and posture reminded me of the arrogance that had withered away once we became serious about one another. “Okay, Casey. Game on.”

“What?”

His eyes were unreadable. “I figured if we were friends, we could show each other some respect. Not rub any hookups in the other person’s face. But since you so rudely swatted away my outreached hand—”

I rolled my eyes. “Were you this annoying when we dated? Because I’m surprised we lasted as long as we did.”

He leaned down and whispered in a low rumble, “You still want me. I know you. I know you. I remember how you get defensive when you want to hide what you’re feeling. I get that your pride will keep you from telling me the truth about what really happened between us. And I know that by the time this boat docks back in port, you’ll be in my bed, asking for a another chance.”

I flushed and said in an affronted voice, “In your dreams, creep.”

“Like I said, Casey, game on.” He planted a quick, affectionless peck on the side of my head before sidestepping around me. He walked away confidently back toward our group. Meanwhile, my legs were unable to function. I was very close to collapsing into a feeble puddle on the deck. How was I going to last a week with Cole? Would I win the worst friend of the year award if I abandoned ship right that second?

For chrissakes, he’s writing love songs in your honor. How much more obvious can he be? I don’t think he could do a much bigger gesture. He does have ink on his arms, maybe you can just wait for him to tattoo your name on himself.”

“You’re a huge pain in the ass, you know?”

“No, I’m the annoying voice of reason when it comes to love. Well, with the exception of my own love life.” Her stare was intense. “I know you have your issues with Blake and Autumn, but setting all other things aside, I think you understand how much they truly love one another. And what I’m witnessing between you and Levi is making me having flashbacks to when they first met.”

I didn’t continue arguing with her. I’d been fighting against the falling in love, but I’ve should have seen that love wasn’t what I should have been avoiding. I was afraid of heartache, but never having love in the first place was likely a worst fate.

Levi was a rarity. And smart girls didn’t run away from the Levis of the world. They ran straight into their arms.

“I know a lot of girls have a fantasies about being with twins. Especially two as hot as us.” Evan smirked. “But it’s just not happening, sweetheart.”

“Will you shut it, Evan.” Levi came up from behind me and I could hear his annoyance. He turned his head to face me. “He’s just messing with you. My brothers have a warped sense of humor.”

“You guys were really great,” I said as I felt all of their eyes on me. When no one replied, I asked, “How did you come up with the name? Trojan Jedi is um… pretty unique.”

“We combined a reference to sex and Star Wars,” Evan said. “Because what two things do guys like better?”

Rain rolled her eyes. “Obviously, they came up with it before I joined. We’re open to better suggestions.”

“Not happening. We already have a rep and we don’t want to alienate the fans,” Evan said.

“By fans, he means the girls who come to the shows to sleep with them after.” Rain directed her statement at me. I felt the stirrings of jealousy deep inside and couldn’t help but hope she was referring to the twins and not the youngest brother.

Rain slunk off the bar stool and slowly walked to stand in front of Levi and myself. “Our break is almost over, so I’m going to head back up,” Rain said. “Nice meeting you, Delia.”

“Great to meet you too.” Rain made eye contact with Levi and I felt something silently pass between them before she turned and walked away. Her movements and voice were leisurely as if she knew she was worth waiting for. The brothers waved and followed Rain back to the stage area.

I cleared my throat. “So, do you have to go too?”

Levi smiled. I loved how his hazel eyes glittered with amusement as he considered me. “I have a minute or two.” He took a sip of water, but kept his eyes locked on my face. Once finished, he set the water bottle behind me on the bar counter. “Did I tell you how glad I am you came?”

“You may have mentioned it.” I was beaming at him like a complete fool. Levi was such a departure from most guys I’d hung around. He was sweet and open and I loved spending time with him.

“Can you stay a while?” he asked. “We could hang out after…”

I lifted my eyebrows. “Just hang out?”

Levi let loose a strangled laugh. “Oh… the stuff Rain said, she was talking about Cole and Evan.”

“And not you?” I asked while attempting to keep out any inflection from my voice.

Levi shook his head. “That’s not my thing.”

“Sleeping with girls after your rock show isn’t your thing?” I didn’t conceal the disbelief in my tone. Levi shrugged and looked a little uncomfortable with the topic. Of course, his reaction made me all the more curious. “Do you have a girlfriend?”

“No girlfriend. And my brothers think I’m lame, but I don’t like hooking up with randoms each night like they do.” He scrubbed his jaw and continued, “I’ve had two serious girlfriends and things ended in both relationships because things ran their course.”

I smirked. “Are you a real boy? Because I don’t think I’ve met any guy like you before. You’re nice, polite, and into committed relationships. There must be some secret flaw you’re hiding.”

“Maybe you’ve just been hanging out with the wrong type of guys.”

Excerpt
When we reach the deck, everyone stops to stare at me. Trying to ignore the blatant curiosity, I follow Hanna down the aft stairs to the brig. Zane and Taranis occupy cells across from each other. They're both sitting on the floor glaring daggers at each other. Hanna hands the key to me and slips away. Inching closer, I'm careful to remain out of reach of the two prisoners. As soon as they see me, both men jump up and start talking over each other.

"Ashlyn! How are you feeling, Love?" Zane asks.

"Ashlyn, my fiery angel, you are a ray of sunshine in this dank prison!" Taranis says.

"I'm gonna let you both out, if, and only if, you promise to behave," I threaten. Both men nod their agreement. "That means no fighting. It also means we never, and I mean never, speak of what happened last night." When I get no argument, I free Zane first and then Taranis.

"Do you even know what happened last night?" Zane asks, taking me into his arms. I stand rigid in his embrace, not sure if I'm ready to forgive him quite yet.

"Only what Hanna told me," I snap at him.

"I saved your virtue from this raving lunatic," Taranis says, pointing at Zane.

"Then you decided to take it for yourself!" Zane yells back at him.

"Did you not hear me?" I shout. Pulling myself from Zane's embrace, I back up and glare at both men. "No speaking of last night. Period. End of discussion."

"Yes, Love," Zane replies.

"Yes, virtuous virgin," Taranis replies.

"Taranis!" I release a menacing growl, and wince when my right eye starts to tic. "Yes?" he asks, eyes full of mock innocence.

"Run," Zane says.

Taranis listens to Zane's advice and takes off up the stairs to the deck with me hot on his heels.

Kimber Leigh Wheaton is a YA/NA author with a soft spot for sweet romance and is a member of Romance Writers of America.

She is married to her soul mate, has a teenage son, and shares her home with three dogs and four cats. No, she doesn’t live on a farm, she just loves animals. Her house is filled with dragons, though she does lament that they are the porcelain, non-flying variety.
