I just read the two books in the Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand, so right now I'm majorly crushing on Tucker. Hand has me swooning over her descriptions of him-makes me want to run away to Wyoming and find a rodeo hand lol. Daemon Black from the Lux series by Jennifer L Armentrout and Ian O'Shea from The Host by Stephenie Meyer are others that come to mind.

Ever read a book and feel very confused afterwards? Like you read the whole thing, but weren't exactly sure if you loved the book? That's my feelings after reading Crewel. The story is staying with me days after finishing it, but I still can't decide how I feel about the characters, the romance and the ending.

The plot was an interesting concept. In this alternate universe, the world is controlled by spinsters who can weave time. Most girls are raised in the society to believe that being a spinster is a glamorous and wonderful thing. However, Adelice's parents have always tried to hide her abilities in order to keep her out of the Guild's control.

The beginning of the book was amazing. I was immediately drawn into Adelice's world and her family's struggles against a corrupt society. Once she arrives at the compound, the book was still interesting as readers are introduced to the spinsters and the hierarchy of the Guild.

Adelice was a good protagonist. She had some spunk, especially when dealing with the villains of the story. I wasn't a fan of the romance. Jost came off as bland and I didn't see much depth to his character. Eric was the preferred love interest in my opinion, but then he disappeared for the second half of the book.

The world-building was a struggle for me. I just could not visualize the idea of how things were controlled on the loom and through weaving. Several times, I had to stop reading because I couldn't quite wrap my head around it.

The ending felt a little rushed. There were so many plot points left open that I would've liked to see at least a few of the conflicts resolved before waiting for the next book.

Overall, a good book that has the potential to become a great series.

Second Sight Book Three FAQs

Today, I thought I’d talk about Second Sight Book Three. Readers had a few questions about it and I have shared my answers below. Now, if you haven’t read New Revelations, BEWARE, there will be spoilers in this post.

When will the next book be released?

My hope is to release Second Sight Book Three in March. It would be awesome if it works out to be March 7 (my birthday!). I’m working as quickly as I can because I know cliffhangers can drive readers crazy (hopefully in a good way). There will be a total of four books in the series and possibly a prequel novella.

I HATE Declan. Will he ruin everything between Jared and Kate?

Declan has inspired a special kind of hatred it seems. I’m actually planning a character interview post where he responds to all of his hate mail. Declan will be in the next book, but Kate ends up working on a new missing persons case without his help.

Are Jared and Kate really over?

Not if Kate has any say in it. In the first half of the third book, Kate invites herself to tag along with Jared while he visits his aunt in Maine. This part is enjoyable to write because readers get to learn more about Jared and his family. There will also be a chapter told from Jared’s point of view.

Will we find out more about Kate’s future visions?

Kate turns a bit spastic after her vision at the end of last book. She becomes paranoid over who could want to kill her and tries to figure out how to protect herself from the fate she witnessed. The future vision puts a lot of things in perspective for Kate and it helps her continued growth through the next two books.

This was an interesting entry in the YA dystopian genre that I thoroughly enjoyed. It reminded me of the Leonardo DiCaprio/Claire Danes movie version of Romeo and Juliet. The Fosters and Roses of Mystic City I envisioned as stand-ins for the Montagues and Capulets.

Aria is one of those narrators that grows on you the more you read. At first, I was thinking she may be one of those useless heroines who do absolutely nothing meaningful throughout the book. I was very wrong and she really came into her own as she began to see flashes of her life before her memory loss. I loved her drive to be a good person despite her privileged upbringing.

I loved the mystery aspect of the book. It really kept me guessing at what had happened to Aria. The book has plenty of action too and the scenes with the Mystics certainly had my heart racing.

Hunter had all of the makings of a captivating YA love interest. He’s mysterious, dangerous and protective of Aria. I liked him more in the beginning than later in the book. His sappy side didn’t seem to fit and it made me roll my eyes a few times at the romance.

The secondary characters were scene stealers. I especially liked Davida, she was true and loyal to Aria. Hunter’s best friend Turk was also an interesting character that I would’ve liked to see more of.

The world building was a little confusing to me. It didn’t seem consistent and I couldn’t quite wrap my head around this dystopian version of Manhattan. Don’t get me wrong, it sounded cool, but I would’ve liked more details to get a better picture in my head.

Overall, a really great book and I can’t wait to read the sequels.

First of all, I would like to thank Heather's Book Chatter for having me as a Guest.  I always appreciate opportunities to talk to fans and reach new ones as well.  

I have always enjoyed reading, especially in the fantasy genre.  I have also always enjoyed writing.  When I began Legends of Darkness back in early 2010 I really wasn't intending on it becoming a series book.  I have read a lot of series books and enjoy them, but I didn't start the series with the those intentions in mind.  I had been thinking of the concept of Legends for about a year before I began writing it.  I was working through the details of finding something fresh.  I was actually bored with same old concept of vampires and wanted to spin it on its ear.  I wanted to find something that would be as shocking and different as Bram Stokers Dracula was back in 1897.  I just wanted a fresh concept and an explanation for why they are considered to be evil.  Once I found my beginning I began writing.  

Legends begin with just an average woman who dies in an unfortunate accident.  She leaves behind a life of family and friends.  She is thrown into an afterlife where she becomes Samoda, a Warrior in the army of Nuem.  She is not only a Warrior but destined to become a leader in this army.  Through her struggles with the afterlife, we learn many things about the species that she has become and about the hierarchy of all the species that exist in the Remnants of Life stories.  The Warriors have been on earth since before humans existed. They were made to destroy evil, it is innate to them and they really can't help it.  I intertwine the story of the Warriors with legends of vampires.  I mix it up a little and make Vlad Tepes a really bad guy.  In Legends he fell in love with one of the Warriors and when she denied him, he became filled with vengeance towards all of them.  He began to do horrible things and blame it on them.  He falsely accused them of being evil vampires that were nothing more than blood sucking killers.  When this happened they began to stay away from humans as much as possible.  I have created the Warriors as "Dangerous Saviors". ..They are here to protect the world from demons that continuously plot to take over the human race and sometimes really evil humans just get in their path and they can't help but destroy them as well. 

Witches, the second book in the Remnants series, is due to be out on December 1, 2012.  It is a continuation of the story, but from the perspective of a seemingly human woman, Kali Rose Marriott. Her life becomes entangled with the Warriors and well...all hell breaks loose.  In Witches, I get a little more involved in world building as I being to really take on Atheria and Vicus, which are the two places that the other species reside when they are not here either saving the humans or trying to take us over.

I anticipate the Remnants of Life Series to be five books long.  I am currently working on the third book in the series.  As I said earlier when I began writing Legends, I did not know it would become a series book.  As I worked on Legends, it evolved not only in my mind but on paper.  I began outlining the whole series as I wrote the first book.  Some of the storylines have varied a little from the beginning outline, but for the most part it has stayed on course with that original outline. In light of vampires being used so much in books today, I believe the Remnants series gives a completely fresh idea to the concept.

At a young age Georgia learned the value of getting lost in a good book. She has always enjoyed reading and letting her imagination run wild. In her early teenage years she began to put her own stories down on paper as she plunked out the words on an old manual typewriter.

In 1996 Georgia enrolled at Missouri State University where she majored in Psychology. While there she found an untamable thirst for Philosophy and Greek Mythology. Many evenings she can still be found curled up with one of the great Greek Tragedy’s or reading about personal continuity by Rene Descarte.

Over the years Georgia has harbored the dream of being a published author and written many short stories. On January 10, 2010 she embarked on the dream as she began to bring the characters from her first novel, “Legends of Darkness”, to life. Upon completion in June 2010 she realized that it was not a single book but a series and created the concept of the series “Remnants of Life”. She is currently working diligently on the “Remnants of Life” series.

How to Meet Deadlines and Remain Sane

This was another guest post as part of my blog tour. I shared a few tips on how to manage your workload. I find it very applicable now that I'm more than halfway through NaNoWriMo.

I work as both a novelist and freelance article writer. This means twice the number of deadlines I have to meet. I’m also a mother to two very wild boys under the age of five. When I look at my schedule some days, my first instinct is to crawl under the covers and hide. However, with some good organization, you can get deadlines met and not lose your mind.

Tune It All Out

I have a hard time focusing on my work when I’m logged onto a computer. In the middle of working, I’ll stop to check my email, Facebook, Twitter and Goodreads accounts. You’re not going to miss much if you don’t look at your social networks every ten minutes! Try to keep your internet browser closed when you’re working and create set times to check it. You’ll find you’re much more efficient and meet deadlines without cutting it down to the wire.

Prioritize

One of my most annoying qualities is that I’m a “yes” person. I have a hard time turning down projects or telling someone I’m unable to help them out. If you have a deadline, the work needs to be your top priority. Spreading yourself too thin will only make you crazy and affect the quality of your writing.

Get Unstuck

When you’re hung up on a scene of your book, it can bring everything to a scratching halt. Instead of trying to work out the scene, skip it. Writing additional scenes may help you work out the plot and dialogue naturally. If you’re looking for inspiration, consider going back and re-reading parts of your manuscript. It may spark an idea or help you recapture the character’s voice.

Ask for Help

If you have other commitments, don’t be afraid to ask for help as you try to reach that deadline. For instance, having your mother come over for a few hours to watch your kids while you work can make a huge difference.

If you absolutely can’t meet that deadline, talk to your editor. See if something can be worked out. Life is crazy and things come up. Be honest and give a reasonable timeframe on when you can have the work to them.   

Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

I can’t believe I’ve missed out on this incredible book for so long! I LOVED IT!!! Everything about it was amazing and I am freaking out that I have to wait for the sequel until next year.

Shatter Me is one of those books that readers seemed to be split on: they either love it or hate it. I think what some people hate about it is what made me fall in love with it. I love the beautiful and flowery prose and I thought the strikethrough sentences were an interesting writing technique. I’ve never felt completely inside a character’s head, the way I did with Juliette.

The characters were incredible. Juliette was an amazing protagonist and I loved how she sounded half-crazy most of the time. Her descriptions transported me to this dark and disturbing dystopian world. Her terror jumped off of the pages and I sympathized with her horror over her abilities.

 

The love interest was handsome, mysterious and protective—the perfect YA male lead. The scenes between Adam and Juliette were smoldering and her need for him was desperate and beautiful. Most villains in books can come across as one dimensional. This is certainly not the case of Warner. He was so compelling that I loved every single scene he was in.

I can’t say enough amazing things about this book. I sometimes find hyped books fail to live up to their expectations, but Shatter Me certainly surpassed mine.

Q: Books are turned into movies all the time! Turn it around. What movie would make a great book?

So many of my favorite movies were books first, so that's a toughie. I think Christopher Nolan movies are usually great picks for books so maybe Memento and Inception (at least I don't think they were based on novels).

Mix’n'Match: The bookish gods are giving you free hand, you can pick any one character (book, TV series/movie, play etc) and inject them into a different novel of your choice. Which character and series would you mix’n'match?

Wow, that's a really tough one. I would maybe put Eric from the Sookie Stackhouse novels in the Twilight universe. See how he would interact with the "vegetarian" vampires. Or maybe put Stephanie Plum from the Janet Evanovich novels in a supernatural mystery like the Sookie Stackhouse novels. I think Stephanie and Lulu would be hilarious while dealing with the paranormal.

To start off, I have to say I REALLY loved this book! It had all of the qualities that I love in new adult novels. This debut author is certainly one to watch and I really hope More was only a series starter and the story continues in subsequent books.

The setting takes place in college which is my favorite time period in a character’s life to read about. The author was really able to capture the college experience and how our relationships change as we enter this phase of our life.

Ava was instantly likable. She’s a normal girl that doesn’t realize there’s something extraordinary about her. Even once she finds out about her ties to an ancient race, she still wishes to return to her normal life. I liked reading about her experiences coming to terms with her powers and how she turns into a tough girl by the novel’s end.

Caleb was great. I loved his protective instincts and how he was willing to defy everything he knew for her. Forbidden love is one of my favorite plot devices which made me cheer for Ava and Caleb as a couple. I liked how she started falling for him before his true nature was revealed.

The world-building was done exceptionally well. As the plot moves away from the college, it was easy to picture the paranormal elements described by the author. The writing and pace flowed well and I never felt too bored to continue reading.

The main conflict was resolved by the end of the book, but left enough unanswered questions where I believe a sequel could be written. I hope the author has one in the works because I’ll be first in line to buy it.
